commentary
Originally, it did NOT mean label or pointer. संज्ञा meant a bundle, act of bundling and unpacking.
so when वर्ण समास poiter to constituent meaning was conceived to be a composition, deriving meaning from its constituents that were to be unpacked to understand the meaning of the bundle, it was called संज्ञा.
Later, with overuse and general human brain circuitry - heuristic - causing repetitive tasks to become a shortcut, संज्ञा became a pointer, and everybody stopped unpacking the bundle to find its meaning.
Except curious वैयाकरणी souls. Typical non productive self amusing activity that i fear can make me निघन्टु / निख्खट्टु.
