Known facts

  • There was high nasalisation
  • Tonal manipulations were absent
  • Breath control was rudimentary or absent. (ह्रस्व दीर्घ प्लुत) are absent
  • Maximum two/three phonemes plus one nasal can be combined in one breath.
  • Consonants could be pronounced without a trailing vowel. The trailing vowel was not mandatory. अ at end was not default.
  • back-low vowels were difficult/indistinguishable
  • with higher epiglottis and larynx, it was possible to peak whille drinking eating
