Commentary
Wick making was such a powerful technology, it obliterated all previous meanings of दीप.
If दीप् is not relevant as lamp, the word using दीप् is almost certainly pre-wick making eta.
On other hand, if we are understanding words in pre-lamp making era, दीप् is to be itnerpreted as rolling/throwing/giving rope and not as lamp/wick.
